Malaysia maybe a choice for you for relax if you think Thailand is too crazy and Indonesia is a little too far. I wanted to be relax so I spent a few days in the beach area in the East - Sabah; and did not go to Kuala Lumpur. Flights to KL and the west of Malaysia are cheap, but a little more to go to the East.

Penang, Georgetown is a relaxing place / island. English is spoken everywhere. It has strong tradition (UN heritage site) as well as modern development. Beaches in Penang are very nice too

Kota Kinabalu, Sabah

I flew via Brunei, an interesting little kingdom in South East Asia; to go to Sabah. Sabah is very modern and things were not as cheap as I thought. Also it does not look like Asia, but more like a small American town. I regret I did not have time for climbing the Mount Kinabalu which is recommended by everyone I know. If you want to see sea turtle and some bigger fishes, spend more money to go to the East end of Sabah.

Kuala Lumpur

The capital of Malaysia, not so convenient to go from the airport. A modern city and a paradise for shoppers. Public transportation is not so great there but if you only go for shopping and party, basically every shopping mall and bar are connected with footbridges.

I stayed at the Hyatt near the Petronas Twin Tower. You can find cheaper hotels with the same conveniency in the area, and they all have big public swimming pool where, as you know, you can swim 365 days a year.
